The Hyphen is a short dash used to join two words into a compound word.
Railway-station, hand-bill, shoe-lace, vice-chancellor, dog-biscuit, match-box, left-handed, under-sized, narrow-minded, open-hearted, book-case, re-arrange, pell-mell, …
It is also used to divide a word of more than one syllable at the end of a line. A word of only one syllable must not be divided.
