Ago and Before. 


Before as a preposition and Ago as an adverb are used to express the same meaning.

We can say: I was in Colombo three years ago.

Or I was in Colombo before 1999.

We do not say: I was in Colombo three years before.

But we can say: I was in Colombo three years before you were.
