Gerunds.
There is a form of the verb exactly the same as the present participle, but derived from a different form in old English. This form also ends in -ing, and is a verbal noun, called a Gerund.
The word Gerund means doing something.
Examples:
Smoking causes heart attacks.
Betting / drinking / stealing … is a bad habit.
I like listening to singing.
All your comings and goings are known.
Killing beings means killing your own lifespan.
