Verbs are inflected (that is, they change their form) according to the number and person of the subject or subjects.

There are two numbers, singular and plural.

Inspect the following sentences.

He plays cricket.
We play tennis.
It costs three rupees.
They cost a rupee each.

He plays cricket – He = singular, third person – plays = singular verb.

We play tennis – We = plural, first person – play = plural verb.

It costs three rupees – It = singular, third person – costs = singular verb.

They cost a rupee each – They = plural, third person – cost = plural verb.

Homework.
