The Verb Must. 


1. The Verb Must has no change of form for tense, number or person. It denotes necessity or duty.

You must be quick or you will be late.

Why must I take this medicine?

2. For the past tense had to is used instead of must.

We do not say: He was late because he must call at the post-office.

We say: He was late because he had to call at the post-office.

3. Must is also used when we wish to express certainty or that something has happened or been done.

This must be the right road.

It must be half past ten now.

They must be home by now.
